Summer Camp

2012 SUMMER CAMP

Our camps are consistent with the principles of Waldorf education and provide a balanced experience of doing, feeling and thinking in a way that stimulates, fun, creativity and a sense of well-being. Children attending our camps are surrounded by a harmonious environment where rhythm and structure encourage opportunities for free play, games, crafts and a variety of artistic activities. Many of our summer camp leaders are trained and experienced Waldorf teachers.

Session One: June 18 – June 22

Circus Camp
with Janet Dunwoody

Open to all newcomers! And of course to those of you who have joined Janet in circus fun in the past. Circus camp will be an adventure into tight-wire walking, unicycling, juggling, pyramid building and plate spinning. The group will work towards a performance on the final day.

Early Childhood Outdoor Camp
with Hans Walser

A week of songs, hikes, games and storytelling! Each day will bring with it a new beautiful place in nature, such as: the natural open spaces and trails near our school, Arastradero Preserve in Palo Alto, and Santa Cruz beaches.

Session Two: June 25 – June 29

Early Childhood Camp: Gardening
with Tiffany Trujillo

Calling all busy bees to summer camp! Nimble hands are needed for crafting, cooking, gardening, building and caring for animals. These camps will model the gentle rhythm of our kindergartens that so lovingly nourish the child’s developing coordination, cooperation, and creativity. Each day will be a calm and joyful journey through imaginative play, circle games, songs, and stories. Our time together will end outside in the beautiful summer sun with water play. A morning snack will be provided.

For Session Two, we will help tend the beautiful gardens all around campus and also create some of our own to share at home.

Books, Cooks, and Beyond
with Jane Philipson


Each day will bring a different work of classic children’s literature from authors such as E.B. White, Robert McCloskey, A.A. Milne, Maurice Sendak, and Tomie De Paola, to name a few…as well as some contemporary gems. Our mornings will be filled with cooking, art, and other creative projects inspired by these timeless books. “Chicken Soup with Rice,” anyone? Maybe a forkful of pasta from Strega Nona’s magic pot…Dedicated to my mama, who raised us on these books.

Session Three: July 2 – July 6

Early Childhood Camp: Sandcastles
with Tiffany Trujillo

For session three, please bring any and all nature-made treasures and embellishments that your heart desires to build and beautify sand castles on our playground! We will work on several projects both on our own and in groups.

Drumming Camp
with Simon Colbert

Rhythm is in your heart, your body and your soul. Rhythm is as natural as your pulse and breath, and it’s FUN!
In drumming camp we will use our feet and hands to stomp and clap, play drums, tap sticks, shake, sing and create nourishing rhythmic music together! We will also build some small instruments of our own, all while enjoying the summer sun outdoors.

Camp will be closed Wednesday July 4th for Independence Day.

Session Four: July 9 – July 13

Early Childhood Camp: Animals
with Tiffany Trujillo

For Session Four, we will have animals visiting each day. We will learn how to interact gently with our animal friends and watch them for cues of communication. We will feed and bathe them, and do many other things involved in creating a safe space to share and play. When the chickens visit, we will all eat eggs!

Gymnastics

This year in gymnastics camp we will enjoy movement games together to support our work on basic gymnastic skills such as: handstands, cartwheels, rolls and jumps on the floor and beam, and swings and circles on bars.

Early Childhood Camp: Cooking

For session five, we will cook something delicious to take home to our families each day. The children will experience the entire process, from churning butter and grinding flour, to the sweet smell right under their noses when they take that first bite.

Early Childhood: Nature Crafts

For planning purposes and due to the limited number of campers we can enroll, summer camps are not refundable.


About Afternoon Aftercare


Aftercare is available after each summer camp session from 12:30-5:30 PM at a cost of $8 per hour per child. An afternoon snack is provided. We have water play, crafts, games, free play, and fun! Please send your child with a healthy, garbage-free lunch. Please fill out attached schedule to reserve care and call the Aftercare direct line at 650-209-9410 with any questions, cancellations or changes to your reservation.

About Our Summer Camp Teachers



Tiffany Trujillo is Co-director of the WSP Aftercare Program, an experienced early childhood educator, and parent of two school-age girls. She is a graduate of Rudolph Steiner College.

Jane Philipson is Co-director of the WSP Aftercare Program. She holds degrees in both English and Education, and in addition to classroom teaching, has also worked extensively in the specialty food industry. She is the parent of one WSP alum and two school-age girls.

Janet Dunwoody is the Faculty Chair and Movement Teacher at WSP. She is a graduate of the Spatial Dynamics Training at Rudolf Steiner College, and has extensive work experience in the wider fitness world as well.

Hans Walser is a Kindergarten Teacher at WSP and was, himself, Waldorf-educated from nursery through high school.

Laila Waheed is an alumna of WSP’s Lower School and a 2012 graduate of our High School. She is currently dances and studies at Santa Clara University. Laila was a competitive gymnast for 10 years and has offered gymnastics summer camps at WSP in years past.

Simon Colbert is our Facilities Manager and a WSP parent. Drum and dance has been a huge part of his life from the beginning. He has been a student of drumming for nearly a decade with Master Drummer Abdoulaye Diakate from Senegal, as well as numerous amazing local Bay Area percussion teachers. Simon’s passion is West African Roots – the base for all world beats.
