Join the WSP Adult Education Series on Early Childhood in the third of five talks by Bill Roberson.  This talk, entitled "No! I'm Not Going To!  Working with the Will of Young Children," will describe an approach to discipline that is based on an understanding of the children's developing will, and that meets their physical, soul, and spiritual needs.  Parents of all grades are encouraged to attend.  A $5-20 donation to offset expenses will be much appreciated; the talk will take place on the Lower School campus.

Adolescence Series: Denise Pope - High School, College, and Beyond - 7:00 - 9:00 PM

What kind of learning environment do our students need to be successful in college and in life? Denise Pope will address this issue and more when she comes to WSP to give a lecture.

Denise Pope, Ph.D., has been a lecturer at the Stanford University School of Education for the past eight years, specializing in student engagement, curriculum studies, qualitative research methods and service learning. She founded and directs the SOS: Stressed-Out Students project, a national research and intervention project for public and private K-12 schools to counter the causes of academic stress and increase student health, engagement with learning and integrity. Her book, “Doing School”: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students (Yale University Press, 2001), was awarded the Notable Book in Education by the American School Board Journal. Dr. Pope has received the Stanford University School of Education Outstanding Teacher and Mentor Award on three occasions and consults with a variety of public and private schools in the area.

There is no presale for community members; however, workers are invited to shop as they sort and cash out when they leave.

This event is a fund-raiser for the middle school, a way for us to encourage the reuse of goods, and a social event

First Day of School - Opening Day Ceremony

The 2008/2009 school year begins with our traditional opening ceremony at 8:30 AM, including the presentation of roses to the first grade students from the eighth grade students and student, teacher and staff introductions. Parents are welcome to attend and stay for refreshments after the ceremony.

School dismisses at 12:50 PM. Aftercare is open.

New Parent Orientation

7:00 - 8:30 PM

This orientation is for new and fairly new parents interested in finding out more about the culture of our school. Members of the administration and our new Parent Circle will present an overview of our Community Life; including the role of parents, parent education and cultural events, who to contact with questions, and how to voice a concern to someone “in charge.”

Everyone is welcome to attend, and is especially recommended for families who have recently joined WSP.

Celebrate the beginning of our new year together at a dinner in your honor. Instead of the usual Back to School Night with speeches and introductions, the newly formed Community Life Committee has planned an event all about creating and renewing social connections, celebrating and honoring ourselves and each other and the work that all do to create this community. This evening is for parents only.

Holiday Faire

The Waldorf School of the Peninsula (WSP) will be hosting its annual Holiday Faire from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 11311 Mora Drive, Los Altos, CA.  The event, based on centuries-old traditions and steeped in beauty and reverence for the season, features entertainment, a café, candle dripping, wreath making and other seasonal crafts for both children and adults.
