Rudolf Steiner College Open Class

Child Development with Astrid Schmitt-Stegmann

This course looks at the development of the child in the early stages of life. The focus will be the kindergarten and the younger grades, exploring what it means for a Waldorf teacher to work with a “healing” education. How do we support the development of a healthy habit life, balanced temperaments, and socially responsible character? The content of the class alternates lectures and discussions with experiential activities that work on strengthening the life forces of the young child.

Rudolf Steiner College Open Class

Education as an Art with Astrid Schmitt-Stegmann and Ernst Schuberth

This course is based on Rudolf Steiner’s lectures published as The Education of the Child. In these lectures Steiner describes the nature of the child as an evolving human being. The content of this course offers a basic understanding of child development and related approaches to learning. It also covers the basis of the Waldorf pedagogy and provides nourishment, inspiration, and insight for both teachers and parents.

Alumni Panel Discussion - 7 pm

Some of the most frequently asked questions at our school tours and within the middle school grades are centered around our alumni's experience after they graduate from WSP. How did they manage the transition into high school? Was it difficult to adjust? Were they well prepared? Now you will have the chance to get the answers to all of these questions and more! We have invited former students to discuss his or her "life after WSP" and to engage in a conversation with the audience about their high school and college experiences. Two of our panelists will share the experience of attending a Waldorf high school. Parents and middle school students are highly encouraged to attend this special event and meet some interesting young adults.

This workshop offers parents the opportunity to deepen their Waldorf Experience. Our Education Support teachers will discuss this specific phase of child development and how parents and teachers can partner together to meet the children at that stage. Bring your questions.  All parents are encouraged to attend for a comprehensive overview of child development.

Sacred Geometry Lecture with Frank Chester - 7pm

Exploring the Relationship between Form and Spirit
Since encountering the work of Rudolf Steiner, Frank Chester has been exploring the relation between form and spirit. In this lecture he will present how geometry is interweaving between the physical manifestations and archetypes.
Topics include:
  • Sacred geometry as an integration of art and science
  • Geometry seen through Alchemical process of earth, water, air and fire
  • Revelations on heart functioning as seen from geometrical dimensions
  • Architecture based on the human heart

Day in the Waldorf Nursery - 10 - 11 am

Let your child experience the magic of childhood. Join our Nursery teacher for a hands-on introduction to the Waldorf Early Childhood program. Nursery parents and their children will experience typical daily activities in a home-like environment.

Space is limited and reservations are required.  Please attend a school tour prior to this event. This is an event for nursery age children and their parents.  Babes-in-arms are welcome but we request that siblings not attend this event.

Day in the Waldorf Kindergarten - 10:30 am - 12 noon

Let your child experience the magic of childhood. Join our teachers for a hands-on introduction to the Waldorf Early Childhood program. Kindergarten parents and their children participate in circle time, create a watercolor painting, and enjoy a puppet show.

Everyone is encouraged to attend even if you were unable to attend previous meetings. We are studying Betty’s book, Between Form and Freedom. The book is available in our gift store.

Egg Decorating - Ukrainian and Natural Dyes - 10 am

Learn the ancient art of Ukrainian egg decorating. The technique of waxing and dyeing eggs in multiple colors produces brilliant decorative eggs that can be kept for years. Children 8 years and older are welcome with an adult.

Mary Roscoe will be brewing up a rainbow of natural dyes for the children to dip their eggs. Onion skins, beets, cabbage and berries yield unique and attractive natural colors for dyeing eggs. Children of all ages are welcome.

Members of the administration and board meet with parents to share their thoughts and experiences of their child's class.

May Day Celebration and Parent Appreciation Day

Join us in a celebration of music, singing and dancing. The children will dance and braid intricate patterns with the May Pole ribbons, and the upper grades students will perform Morris dances, a traditional form of ritual dance. After the celebration, we will serve strawberry shortcake, tea and coffee on the patio to thank all our wonderful parents and volunteers.

Contra Dance - 7 - 8:15 pm

These dances are designed so everyone can participate, so bring friends and family and come join the fun! It will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church located at 1040 Border Road in Los Altos. The cost is $5/person and $20/family. Fee: $5/person - $20/family.

Grade 5 Greek Pentathlon

The Waldorf Schools' Fifth Grade Greek Pentathlon is the gentle introduction to competition - we "complete" before we compete.

Picture a beautiful blue sky, green grass, an elegant altar to the gods, fifth grade children from different Waldorf schools dressed all in white with a colorful sash denoting to which city state they belong - Athens, Sparta, Thebes or Corinth. Throughout the day the children demonstrate their beauty, grace and style in the five events - the javelin, the discus, Greek wrestling, the long jump and chariot running. This is a day of reverence and awe, of odes to the gods, of laughter and laurels, fun, and newfound friendship.

Begin your weekend with a talk entitled "Healing from the Heart" by Thomas Cowan, MD, author of The Fourfold Path to Healing, Dr. Cowan has more than 20 years' experience in natural and anthroposophical medicine.  His Fourfold Path is a holistic approach to healing that integrates the four aspects of our bodies--the Physical, the Life-Force, the Emotional, and the Mental.

WSP Arts & Crafts Faire & Pumpkin Patch

The 5th annual WSP Arts & Crafts Faire and Pumpkin Patch will take place on Saturday, October 13, 2007 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM at the Lower School campus at 11311 Mora Drive, Los Altos.  This year we have a special treat: a performance of "The Flame of Peace: A Tale of the Aztecs" by our puppetry group.

Please join us in a day of celebrating the arts, reflecting on peace, and building community.  We welcome artists of all ages to come join us.  There will be crafts for children, a pumpkin patch, and fresh baked goodies throughout the day.

Join the Adult Education Grade School Series in the first of three talks by Penni Sparks.  For 28 years, Penni has been developing her unique and empowering perspectives on child development, relationships in community, and the impact of adults taking up their own inner work.  With warmth and humor, Penni will teach practical and easy-to-implement tools to ennoble rather than breed entitlement in your children, and to turn around difficult situations with humor and imagination.  Penni is an adjunct faculty member at the Rudolf Steiner College and 20-year educator.  Parents of all grades are encouraged to attend.  A $5-$20 donation to offset expenses will be much appreciated.  This talk will take place on the Lower School campus.

The Magic Forest Journey for Kindergarten children, their siblings and families will take place on Saturday evening, October 27 at Redwood Grove at 482 University Avenue in Los Altos.  This wonderful evening features children dressed in gentle costumes led by teachers dressed as angels down a wooden path lit by jack o’ lanterns from story to story, acted out with care and beauty by members of our school community.  More information about exactly what time each family should arrive for the Magic Forest Journey will come home with your Kindergarten children.

Adult Education Grades Series: "Meeting the Challenges of Middle School Children in our Contemporary World" with Karen Rivers - 7:00-9:00 PM


Karen Rivers will present a talk focusing on parenting children in the middle school years.  Karen will touch on the emotional life and health, intellectual development, and social needs and dynamics of middle school students, as well as discuss strategies for maintaining good communication and cultivating respect and consciousness in oneself and one’s middle school-aged child.  Karen will also discuss how the Waldorf curriculum meets the middle school child to allow each child’s potential to blossom to fulfillment.  Addressing the keys to healthy growth, creativity and courage, Karen will delve into the wonder and sense of challenge with which our middle school students gaze upon the modern world, and will end the evening with a question and answer session. Parents of all grades are encouraged to attend

The internationally acclaimed concert pianist Wolfgang Wortberg will give two concerts - A Coat & Tie Candlelight Concert on Friday evening, November 2 at 7:00 PM, with a post-concert "Meet the Artist" no-host Champagne reception, and a more casual Matinee Concert on Saturday, November 3 at 1:30 PM, also with a post-concert "Meet the Artist" reception.  In this program entitled "The Life and Music of Ludwig van Beethoven," Mr. Wortberg will perform three piano sonatas: "The Tempest," "The Farewell," and the "Appassionata."  Both concerts will take place in the Parish Hall at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Avenue, Palo Alto, CA and benefit the Waldorf School of the Peninsula.

The fourth annual Moms on the Mountain Walkathon for Women to benefit WSP will take place on Sunday, November 4.  Please bring a lunch and 2 liters of water. Participants sign up their own sponsors and are responsible for collecting donations from their sponsors after the walk.

The Waldorf School of the Peninsula (WSP) will be hosting its annual Holiday Faire from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 11311 Mora Drive, Los Altos, CA.   The event, with activities for children and adults, is based on centuries-old traditions and is steeped in beauty and reverence for the season.
